For example, in places where the summers are really hot and the winters are freezing cold, the flooring will experience significant changes in size. Without a proper installation gap, these changes can cause serious damage to the flooring.
Another reason is drainage. Outdoor WPC flooring is exposed to rain, snow, and other forms of moisture. If there’s no gap between the boards, water can get trapped underneath. This trapped water can lead to mold, mildew growth, and even rot in some cases. A proper gap allows water to flow freely through the boards and drain away, keeping your flooring in good condition.
So, how big should the installation gap be? Well, it depends on a few factors.
The climate of the installation area is a major factor. In regions with a mild climate, where the temperature doesn’t fluctuate too much and there’s not a lot of extreme weather, a gap of about 3 – 5mm between the boards should be sufficient. This small gap allows for a bit of expansion and contraction and also helps with drainage.
However, in areas with a more extreme climate, like places that experience very hot summers and very cold winters, or areas with high humidity, you’ll need a larger gap. I usually recommend a gap of 5 – 8mm. This extra space gives the flooring more room to expand and contract without causing any problems.
The width of the WPC boards also plays a role. Wider boards tend to expand and contract more than narrower ones. So, if you’re using wider WPC boards, you might want to increase the gap slightly. For example, if you have boards that are 150mm or wider, you could go for the upper end of the recommended gap range (around 7 – 8mm in an extreme climate).
The installation method can also affect the gap size. If you’re using a floating installation method, where the boards aren’t attached directly to the sub – floor but are instead floating on top of it, you need to be extra careful with the gap. Floating floors have more freedom to move, so a slightly larger gap might be needed. On the other hand, if you’re nailing or screwing the boards directly to the sub – floor, the attachment can help to restrict some of the movement, but you still need to leave a proper gap.
Let me give you a step – by – step guide on how to ensure the correct installation gap.
Before you start installing the flooring, measure the area carefully. Mark the boundaries and make sure you have all the tools and materials you need. You’ll need spacers to create the gaps. These spacers can be made of plastic or wood and are available in different sizes.
Start laying the first row of boards along one edge of the area. Place a spacer at the end of each board to create the gap. Make sure the boards are straight and level. As you continue laying the subsequent rows, keep using the spacers. Check the gaps regularly to make sure they’re consistent throughout the installation.
When you reach the end of a row, cut the board to fit. Make sure to leave the appropriate gap at the end of the row as well. And don’t forget to leave a gap around the perimeter of the installation area. This gap should be at least 10 – 15mm to allow for expansion and contraction of the entire floor.
I’ve seen a lot of DIY projects where people skip the installation gap or leave too small a gap. And let me tell you, it always ends up causing problems. One time, a customer installed our WPC flooring on his patio without leaving a proper gap. During the hot summer months, the boards started to buckle, and he had to call us to come and fix it. It could have been easily avoided if he’d followed the proper installation guidelines.
