For example, certain enzymes can break down the chemical structure of some endocrine – disrupting chemicals, making them easier for the bacteria in the sewage treatment plant to digest. Bacteria – enhancing agents can promote the growth and activity of the beneficial bacteria that are responsible for breaking down contaminants.
However, biological treatment is a slow process, and some emerging contaminants may be toxic to the bacteria. This means that we need to carefully select the biological treatment chemicals and monitor the conditions in the treatment plant to ensure that the bacteria can work effectively.
The Big Picture
Overall, sewage treatment chemicals have both positive and negative impacts on the removal of emerging contaminants. On the plus side, they offer a wide range of options to tackle different types of contaminants. They can significantly reduce the amount of emerging contaminants in the sewage before it’s released into the environment.
